Highlighted below are
examples of previous relevant work and accomplishments by our mentors and their
trainees. A landmark study
published in September 2008 evaluated the effectiveness of arthroscopic surgery
for osteoarthritis of the knee (N Engl J Med 359: 1097, 2008, publication 2).
Surprisingly, surgery provided no additional benefit to optimal physical and
medical therapy. This research will have tremendous impact on clinical practice
and health care costs across Canada and around the world. Research carried out by
the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging has helped promote exercise by the
elderly, measurably improving the health and mobility of thousands with
considerable impact on health policies across Canada. Protons were found to
act directly on osteoclasts to stimulate bone resorption (Proc Natl Acad Sci
USA 102: 2643, 2005, publication 15). This resolved the 80-year-old medical
mystery of how acid causes bone loss and opened the way for new antiresorptive
therapies. This discovery led to a patent application and collaboration with
Novartis. JuMP mentors collaborate
extensively through partnerships including: the CIHR Group in Skeletal
Development and Remodeling; Canadian Arthritis Network NCE; Emerging Materials
Knowledge Network, a Provincial Centres of Excellence; the New Emerging Team
"Molecular mechanisms of pain and fatigue in osteoarthritis"; and the
Ontario Consortium for Small Animal Imaging.Accomplishments
