Frank BeierFrank Beier

Dr. Frank Beier is the Canada Research Chair in Musculoskeletal Health and an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Beier works on the biology of cartilage, both during skeletal development and the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. He uses genetic, molecular and cell biological approaches, including microarrays, genetically modified mice and surgical models of osteoarthritis, to understand the signaling mechanisms controlling cartilage physiology. Recent work from Dr. Beier’s laboratory and other groups demonstrates that the two processes of cartilage development and osteoarthritis are intimately linked.

He has held a CIHR/The Arthritis Society New Investigator Award from 2001 to 2006 and a PREA award from the Government of Ontario from 2003 to 2008. In addition, he received several awards at UWO, including a Faculty Scholar Award from 2007 to 2009 and several Dean’s Awards of Excellence. He submitted 2 patents on the treatment of osteoarthritis.
